3- Clinical use of Sickle Scalers
Specific Sickle Scalers are manufactured and used for
Anterior and Posterior Applications and are designed for moderate to heavy
deposit removal.
They are primarily used to remove Supragingival Calculus
which is located just below the gingiva.
Furthermore, they come into designs:
- Straight
- Curved
Scalers with Straight Blade: Two cutting edges on a straight
blade that end in a sharp point and is also known as Jaquette Scaler. They are
remarkable for broad facial lingual surfaces and can also be used for
interproximally.

Sickle Scalers Curved Blade: Two cutting edges on a curved
blade that end in a sharp point and are excellent in removal of interproximal
deposits.
Sickle Scaler Instrumentation: It is to remove Calculus,
adapt the tip 1/3 of the cutting edge against the tooth, under the deposit. Tilt
the facial surface of the blade toward the tooth to achieve an approximate 85
degree angle between both the tooth and the blade.
Then gently apply lateral pressure against the tooth and
pull the scaler firmly upward to dislodge the deposit.
Both sides (Cutting Edges) of the blade can be used for
mesial or distal, facial or lingual application.
Please note the instrumentation sequence is same as for
Universal Curettes, using anterior and posterior designs.
Anterior Sickle Scalers have a straight shank compared to
the angled shank of posterior sickle scalers.
